A remarkable example of Romanesque style, the church was built between the 11th and 12th century upon the foundations of a fourth-century Early Christian church. Mosaics dating back from that era are preserved and visible under glass flooring.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row animation=”left-to-right”][vc_column][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][vc_gmaps link=”#E-8_JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbSUyRm1hcHMlMkZlbWJlZCUzRnBiJTNEJTIxMW0xOCUyMTFtMTIlMjExbTMlMjExZDI4ODguMzI5MDQwMTYzMDQ0NyUyMTJkMTMuNTA4MzgzMjE1NDU4NDc2JTIxM2Q0My42MjA1MTAwNzkxMjI0NSUyMTJtMyUyMTFmMCUyMTJmMCUyMTNmMCUyMTNtMiUyMTFpMTAyNCUyMTJpNzY4JTIxNGYxMy4xJTIxM20zJTIxMW0yJTIxMXMweDEzMmQ3ZmJiNDFiNzVjZjclMjUzQTB4NDczZjM0NjFmYTE1N2E3ZiUyMTJzQ2hpZXNhJTI1MjBkaSUyNTIwU2FudGElMjUyME1hcmlhJTI1MjBkZWxsYSUyNTIwUGlhenphJTIxNWUwJTIxM20yJTIxMXNpdCUyMTJzZXMlMjE0djE2MTg5MjkwNDc1MzclMjE1bTIlMjExc2l0JTIxMnNlcyUyMiUyMHdpZHRoJTNEJTIyNjAwJTIyJTIwaGVpZ2h0JTNEJTIyNDUwJTIyJTIwc3R5bGUlM0QlMjJib3JkZXIlM0EwJTNCJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNEJTIyJTIyJTIwbG9hZGluZyUzRCUyMmxhenklMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZpZnJhbWUlM0U=”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][mk_padding_divider size=”20″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1622545650081{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The church was named Santa Maria del Canneto, then Santa Maria del Mercato, because of its proximity to the port and later to the the market.
