Salvatore sat (decorated by Master Filippo between 1213 and 1224, who also designed the facade of the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza), which was demolished.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interior of the Church is circular, and surmounted by a large dome covered in copper. It features a 13th-century wooden Crucifix by an unknown artist, the only object left from the old church, and a painting of Saint Teresa attributed to Francesco Solimena.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the French occupation, the church and the convent were used as barracks by the troops of Napoleon, and some of the friars\u2019 properties were sold.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Church was built between Palaces Ferretti, to the left, and D\u2019Avalos to the right, which was destroyed by bombings in 1943. It was renamed after the Saints Peregrine, whose relics were preserved here until the 8th century, and Teresa, founder of the Order of the Carmelites. Damaged by bombings during World War II and an earthquake in 1972, the church was restored.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plan of the church is circular. There are two side chapels and in the presbytery a high altar, adorned with a Byzantine-style crucifix, crafted sometime between the 12th and 13th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

The church was built in 1538, but only its facade dates back from the 16th century. The inscription above the gate attests the close relationship between this church and the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome. It was almost entirely rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century by architect Francesco Maria Ciaraffoni of Fano. The bell tower was built between 1771 and 1776, and it features a Borromini-style spiraling spire, which was damaged by an earthquake in 1930 and replaced after World War II with a not-so-exact copy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bell tower, much loved by the people of Ancona, is one of the most iconic elements of the city’s skyline.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was built in the 16th century, after a church dedicated to Saint Claudius and the abbey of San Giovanni in Pennocchiara were demolished.<\/span><\/p>\n

Architect Eusebio Petetti was in charge of restoration in 1950. His project aimed at revealing some of the Romanesque structures that had been concealed by work previously carried out by Lorenzo Daretti in the 18th century. Unfortunately, the engineer in charge botched the restoration, which led to public outrage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The remains of Blessed Gabriel Ferretti, a highly reputed and active Franciscan during the Renaissance, were moved here from the Church of San Francesco ad Alto in January 30th, 1943.<\/span><\/p>\n

The church displays a painting by Federico Zuccari, \u201cEcce Homo\u201d, and a copy of the painting by Carlo Crivelli, the \u201cEcstasy of Beato Gabriele Ferretti\u201d. The original, which was held in the church of San Francesco ad Alto and is now on diplay at the National Gallery in London.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”row-content”][vc_column][mk_image src=”https:\/\/anconatourism.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/santagostino.jpg” image_width=”600″ lightbox=”true” align=”center” margin_bottom=”40″ drop_shadow=”true”][mk_fancy_title color=”#222222″ size=”26″ font_weight=”600″ margin_bottom=”0″ font_family=”none” align=”center”]Sant’Agostino[\/mk_fancy_title][mk_divider style=”thin_solid” divider_width=”custom_width” custom_width=”120″ thin_single_color=”#0087ac” thickness=”3″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”40″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1737106800637{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The complex of St. Augustine takes its name from an earlier building, located in the Capodimonte district and formed by a small church and a small dwelling, which the Augustinians replaced in 1339, with the larger complex they erected in a more central and larger place, and was finished towards the end of the 15th century.<\/p>\n

All that remains of the ancient church today is the portal by Dalmatian artist Giorgio di Matteo da Sebenico (formerly the author of the facades of San Francesco alle Scale and the Loggia dei Mercanti), in which Gothic and Renaissance elements blend harmoniously. Statues depicting St. Monica and St. Nicholas of Tolentino, St. Simplicianus, and Blessed Agostino Trionfi are recognizable. Work was completed in 1494 by Michele di Giovanni da Milano and Giovanni Veneziano.<\/p>\n

Renovated in 1764 by Luigi Vanvitelli, as part of a wide-ranging architectural and urban intervention that affected the Adriatic city from the fourth decade of the 18th century, it was lengthened and completely redone inside; with great sensitivity, however, the artist spared the precious 15th-century portal.<\/p>\n

After 1860, with the secularization brought about by the Unification of Italy, the building was profoundly altered in its exteriors, with the separation of the apsidal area for viability needs, the truncation of the bell tower, the redefinition of the elevations in the form of a palace as the headquarters of the Cialdini Barracks, until the destruction of the facade with only the preservation of the rich portal and the wooden door framed in the arched space of a faux ashlar wall.<\/p>\n

Consequently, even the interior is now fractionated into floors and rooms, with the complete and irreversible erasure of the Vanvitellian architectural frameworks and the dispersion of fixed and movable furnishings to other churches in the city and the surrounding area. Some of the paintings here are now on display at the Pinacoteca Civica \u201cF. Podesti\u201d: the Alabarda Altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto and the Saint Augustine Altarpiece (part.) by Andrea Lilli, while Pellegrino Tibaldi’s Baptism of Christ is instead currently in San Francesco alle Scale.
