Thanks to the new three-year agreement 2025-2028 between the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Ancona – Department of Culture, the Roman Amphitheater opens to the public with guided tours and hosts a bill of events entitled “Echoes. Voices from the past, sounds of the present,” curated by the Department of Culture and the Department of Major Events.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the synergy with the National Archaeological Museum of the Marches, the area of the Roman Amphitheater is returned to the city for a unique visitor experience among the layers of a millennia-old history.<\/p>\n
Why the title \u201cEchoes?\u201d As it is a transition year due to the three-year agreement being there are already various requests and heterogeneous festivals planned, it was necessary to identify a name and give the shows a frame and unity, while respecting the specificity of each individual festival. The choice fell on “Echoes. Voices from the past, sounds of the present,” an evocative title, in line with the suggestion of the place that hosts works conceived in the past in a classical (Antigone, Metamorphosis) and modern (Carmina Burana) context and sounds of the present from jazz to dance, from contemporary to Mediterranean sounds. The choice of the title was then joined by that, made with the Archaeological Museum, of the graphics proposed by AMAT.<\/p>\n
Ancona’s Roman Amphitheater is the place to delve into the city’s layered history, from Hellenistic Ancona to the Santa Palazia prison, active until the 1970s, with its marciaronda walkway overlooking the sea. The Roman-era spectacle building was built in the space between Guasco Hill and Cappuccini Hill and could accommodate about 8,000 spectators on twenty tiers of seats: together with the arch of Emperor Trajan, it is the most important Roman monument in Ancona.<\/p>\n
The long life of this area in the heart of the ancient city began much earlier, however, with the Hellenistic road up to the acropolis and the temple of Venus and with the Roman baths, and continued even after the fall of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n
Medieval buildings reused the Roman masonry, starting in the 13th century the convent of St. Bartholomew and then of the nuns of St. Palazia was built on the Amphitheater, used as a prison in the 19th century and remained in use until the 1972 earthquake. Today the Amphitheater, at the center of a new redevelopment project of the Ministry of Culture, re-emerges thanks to demolitions due to war events and the earthquake.<\/p>\n
