PASSETTO CAVES
The Passetto Caves are one of the most beloved places in Ancona. Located in the eponymous beach, these 500 man-made cavities are a marvelous example of “spontaneous architecture” in harmony with nature.
The cavities were dug by local fishermen from the middle of the 19th century until the 1960s to store fishing equipment and boats, such as launches and “battanas”, small sailboats typical of Le Marche, Istria and nearby regions.

The “grottaroli” used recycled and salvaged materials to craft the colorful doors, the docks and their fishing equipment, such as discarded furniture, railway sleepers reused to pull boats ashore and a variety of tiles of different shapes and colors for the flooring.
They spend the day at sea, on the shores or inside their caves, between a meal of fresh fish and a game of cards with their fellow fishermen.
Catch a glimpse of authenticity in this unique landmark of Ancona, and dive in the clear blue water from thousands of ledges. For those who prefer the sand, there is an artificial beach.
Don’t miss the Passetto Caves at night, especially in summer, when the grottaroli turn the lights on after sunset: it’s a charming sight.
