CITTADELLA – SANGALLO FORT

Located in Capodimonte District, on top of Astagno Hill, the “Cittadella” is a Renaissance fort built in 1532 by architect Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane (1484-1546). Overlooking the city, the Cittadella hosts the eponymous park.

The fortress features five bastions, the “Guard”, the “Tip”, the “Bell”, the “Gregorian” and the “Garden” and a network of underground passages. Its highest point is the Torraccia, the central dungeon.

Since June 19th, 2008, the fort has been the seat of the Permanent Secretariat of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, an international organization that coordinates the policies of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Greece. For this purpose, the fort was restored.
