PORTELLA SANTA MARIA

Portella Santa Maria, also known as Portella della Dogana, used to be one of the access points to the city. It is named after the customs office or the church nearby.

The gate was part of the original perimeter wall. It stands on what is left of Via Sottomare, a street dotted with vaulted passages along the walls of the city.

The Portella is made of bricks and stone and consists of a round vault. Partially restored after the World War II, the gate displays medieval features on the side that faces towards the city and 19th-century features on the other side.

Reasons to visit:

  • Passageway between the portn and the city
  • Starting point for a tour of the city
  • Located in front of beautiful Santa Maria della Piazza
