LOGGIA DEI MERCANTI

The Loggia dei Mercanti is a historical palace in the heart of Ancona. Located near the port, it was designed by architect Giovanni Pace, also known as “il Sodo” (“the Solid”), to host trade negotiations, and built by the city government, as attested by two inscriptions “Sumptibus erectum / comunitatis Anconae”. Construction began in 1442, at a time of great economic expansion.

The marvelous facade on the eponymous street for which the Loggia is famous was designed by Giorgio Orsini da Sebenico, and built between 1454 and 1459. Following a devastating fire in 1556, the building was restored by architect Pellegrino Pellegrini, also known as Tibaldi.

Damaged by bombings in 1943, the Loggia was reopened on November 21st, 1952. Today the building houses the Chamber of Commerce of Ancona.
